61. Texas Capitol
In honor of Texas Independence Day I think that it is only appropriate that every Austinite take the time to pay a visit to the Texas Capitol located in the heart of Austin, Texas. There is no doubt in my mind that Texans are probably the proudest Americans and have a pride that only Texans know what I am talking about. It does not matter if you were born here or got here as fast as you could . . . its simply unexplainable but we are blessed to call The Lone State State home.
Here are some Texas Capitol Facts:
- It is the largest state capitol building in the United States
- In 2007 it was ranked the 92nd “America’s Favorite Architecture” place by the American Institute of Architects, in the 2008 poll it was ranked the #1 State Capitol.
- 17 monuments surround the Texas Capitol
- Central Air Conditioning was installed in 1955
They offer FREE guided tours that are generally 45 minutes and are available during the following times:
Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
Saturday, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm
Sunday, Noon – 3:30 pm
Parking is available in the Capitol Visitors Parking Garage at 1201 San Jacinto located between Trinity and San Jacinto Streets at 12th and 13th streets. Parking is free for the first two hours and $.75 for each half hour thereafter
I also hear that playing Capture the Flag after dark on the Capitol Lawn is a favorite pastime – I could not find any information on any such organized event but I do think that is a great idea and would be fun if you could round up a group of friends.
