243. Texas Memorial Museum

Family Friendly, Free things to do in Austin, Museums, Things To Do In Austin | 31 Aug 2010

School is back in session, and that got me thinking about all the great stuff to do around the UT campus. I was going to suggest the tower tour, but it turns out they’re undergoing some renovations and not giving any tours right now. So instead, I thought I’d recommend the Texas Memorial Museum.

The museum is the exhibit hall of the Texas Natural Science Center, and home to some of the coolest and most kid-friendly exhibits you can find in town. I had never been, and wow, what a great find on the UT Campus! They have a huge collection of natural history exhibits, and they have a fantastic dinosaur museum, which has me sold.

Each of its four floors is dedicated to a different theme, covering everything from the prehistoric age to modern day wildlife. It’s almost surprising that a museum of this caliber is free.

They won “Best Museum in Austin for Children” in Nickelodeon’s 2009 Parents’ Picks Awards. Admission: FREE Parking: finding a spot on campus is always an issue.

You can park in one of the garages on campus or take a bus in, they have it best summed up here, http://www.utexas.edu/tmm/.

Alright, for everyone that likes to plan ahead this is your lucky day because I’m going to mention a future list item. Austin Museum Day is September 19th, and most Austin museums will have free admission. http://www.austinmuseums.org/
