295. House of Torment

Random Fun, Things To Do In Austin | 22 Oct 2010

For full disclosure, I have never been here, nor do I have any intention of going. I don’t do scary. The scariest movie I’ve ever seen was the Sixth Sense and that was too much for me.

But I did gather some trusted opinions from some of my fright-seeking friends that were brave enough to give this a try.

The Travel Channel named it “one of America’s scariest Halloween attractions,” so clearly this is not my cup of tea. It has the classic haunted-house theme of entering a house that’s dark, scary, creepy music, fog lights. What takes this to the next level is that the actors are phenomenal, dressed in elaborate costumes and get ups, and they go all out.

The Wall Street Journal called it “20,000 square feet of terror,” so thrill seekers – have at it.  The website says it’s not recommended for people that are pregnant, so they really mean business.

Finally, on an interesting little note, Good Morning America currently has a list of the “Spookies Places in America” http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Halloween/. Of the 9 places on the list, two of them are in Austin — the House of Torment and the Scottish Right Dormitory.
