331. Chuy’s Giving to Children Christmas Parade Benefiting Operation Blue Santa Hello
Free things to do in Austin, Things To Do In Austin | 27 Nov 2010Holiday Season, so did we all survive Black Friday and the first freeze of the season? Time for another Austin Holiday tradition – this one combines Christmas cheer and giving back, it may not be the New York City Macy’s Day Parade but it is a close second.
As you can imagine this parade has all the makings of a fun filled morning with giant inflatable balloons, holiday floats, marching bands, Elvis, Santa, Elves, and my favorite part – classic casrs.
To donate to Operation Blue Santa bring a new unwrapped toy to the parade and Santa’s helpers will come collect it from you as the parade comes through. This year Operation Blue Santa will help 3,500 families and 20,000 children.
This Austin holiday tradition started in 1989 by Chuy’s co-owner, Mike Young in an effort to help raise awareness for the toy drive that was already taking place at his local restaurants. The parade tripled the amount of donations they received the previous years and has grown ever since.
Jolly Holiday everyone, jolly holiday.
