342. Visit the Zilker Tree

I thought we might as well make it a festive holiday Wednesday and give away a Christmas CD, officially making today’s list item very December-ish and awesome! Nothing gets the holiday spirit alive like some good music running through your veins, so I’m giving away Carolyn Wonderland and Guy Forsyth holiday CDs! Two Austin music legends in one CD, it must be our lucky day!

The Zilker Holiday Tree is a longtime Austin tradition. While I will gravely miss the trail of lights this year, we still need to rejoice in the fact that we have an awesome tree filled with 3,309 lights and tons of longtime holiday history.

The tree first was lit in 1965, making this a tradition that is over 40 years old. Austin was one of the first cities to do this kind of tree lighting. The “moonbeam” effect makes it so you can read a wristwatch from 1,500 free away from the tree!
For those out there that can’t get enough of the holiday tree and are ready to take it to the next level, the Zilker Holiday 5K will be on December 26th. For more information visit: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/zilker/zhtparking.htm. This is one of my favorite fun runs of the year.
By now you can probably tell that I absolutely revel in the holiday season, so I’m just trying to get the word out on all the great events going on around town. Hopefully you’ll get a chance to enjoy them with your friends and family. Not having the trail of lights this year is sad, but nothing beats seeing the tree glowing at night with the city skyline in the background. If this doesn’t get you in the Christmas spirit, I’m not sure what will.

I am a realtor here in Austin, and clients are always asking for suggestions on what to do around town. So, I thought I would blog about my experiences, recommendations and what you have to do before you can call yourself a true Austinite.
