There are many reasons why Austin is considered the live music capital of the world, and Blues on the Green is one of them. Blues on the Green is a concert series that happens every other Wednesday at Zilker Park during the summer months. It’s a great event to attend when you want celebrate hump day by relaxing in the early evening, listening to some soothing live music.
About:
Blues on the Green occurs this year from June 8 through August 17. It’s hosted at Zilker Park Rock Island, which is just a short distance from the corner of Barton Springs Road and Robert E. Lee. It’s been a regular occurrence for the past 21 years, though it has changed location from time to time do to outside circumstances. The event typically features local or Texas music – anything from country to folk to rock. Notable performances include Bob Schneider (he’s a regular), Los Lonely Boys and other popular artists. The shows start around 7:30 pm.
Why go?
Well, it’s free, which is awesome, and you get to check out some top notch live music. Think of it as a weekly ACL fest on a much smaller scale. Plus, it’s all ages and pet friendly so you can bring your pooch if you got one. If it’s a blazing hot day, bring some sunscreen and jump in Barton Springs before, during, or after the show (it’s just across the road).
What to bring:
Bring a blanket, lawn chairs, sealed bottles of water, and some cash for the food vendors in case you get hungry for a snack.
Parking:
Depending on what time you go, parking can sometimes be a hassle. You can park under the Mopac bridge or at the free parking lot on Robert E. Lee. Anywhere else might be a bit of a walk. If you bring multiple cars, have everyone pile in one vehicle and drop them off as close to the entrance as you can get.
