335.11 Zilker Tree Lighting Ceremony

Free things to do in Austin, Outside, Random Fun, Things To Do In Austin | 4 Dec 2011

My heart breaks with another year and no Trail of Lights. I absolutely love it, and I’m sad that we have to wait another year for its return. However, all is not lost. Tonight the famous Zilker Tree will be lit for the first time of the season. There will be music by The Barton Hill Choir and Austin Civic Wind Ensemble.

This 155-foot tall “tree” is composed of 39 streamers, each holding 81 multicolored, 25-watt bulbs totaling 3,309 lights. It’s really something to be seen and an absolute icon as you go past the park in December.

The Zilker Tree lighting dates back to December 10th, 1967.

We may be missing the Trail of Lights, but December 5-11th HEB will be hosting HolidayFest Austin. Each night when the Zilker tree lights up, HEB will be handing out candy, fruit, treats, and more. Santa and his elves will be there so everyone can get their picture taken with Santa. There also will be face painting and with other holiday fun.

The Zilker Tree will be lit every night from now – December 31st, 6 p.m. – midnight.

When: today

Time: 6 p.m.

Location:
2100 Barton Springs Road
Austin, Texas 78746

I heard on kut that the long center was hosting trail of lights on their lawn this year. Is that true?

The Long Center will have some of the same displays out, but not a Trail of Lights. They just put up a few along the outside.

I am a true austinite and grew up with every year going to the trail of lights. So when the city decided to be cheap a~holes I knew they didn’t care about all of us true texans and austinites..this town is. Being over populated by overpriced shops to many worthless highrises and more then enough people from out of state. Our small town was fun and less cluttered. Now its expensive and congested..how sad that TRUE AUSTINITES have to move out of austin. So darn sad.

Airforce, congratulations on being better than the rest of us who aren’t “TRUE Austinites” If you’re in the military, I appreciate your service, but not your smugness.

Move back to California you granola-eating, sandal-wearing, carpet-bagger. Your home misses you, you won’t be missed here!

Scott, Airforce is not calling the newcomers out, but rather saying the city has completely sold itself to the highest bidder.  Traditions and landmarks are being dying….rapidly

Marble Falls has a wonderful trail of lights right on the water near the 281 bridge.
