With cooler weather moving in this weekend and the daylight hours getting lean, it can only mean one thing for Austin: The Horns are back at it. UT’s football team is Austin’s hometown heroes. I often lament the fact that we don’t have a major sports team down here in Central Texas, but inevitably, one of my friends will remind me that the Texas Longhorns are more team than any fan could ever hope for. They’ve even got their own network nowadays!
So when Saturday rolls around and you’re looking for the best places to watch The Horns beat up on their BIG 12 rivals, here are the places you’ll want to check out:
- 1. Darrell K. Royal Stadium
There’s really no comparison. Being at the game with thousands of other rabid UT fans is the best way to experience everything about the Texas Longhorns and UT’s school spirit. Surrounding the stadium are countless areas where Horns and opposing fans alike can tailgate and many of the tailgates are family friendly.
If you can’t get tickets for the game, or the Horns are playing away, another good bet is Cuatro’s. Located in the heart of student country (West Campus) Cuatro’s seems like a no-brainer. They’ve got a great selection of beers from blue-collar essentials like Bud and Coors to some tasty local micro-brews from the likes of 512 Brewery and Real Ale Brewing Co. With cooler temperatures their outdoor patio can’t be beat, where you can enjoy stellar grill food, tacos, apps, soups, salads and watch the big game on their massive outdoor TV.
Owned and operated by UT alum, Double Dave’s is THE hangout spot for slices and a pint before, during, and after the game. Within earshot of Darrel K. Royal Memorial Stadium, you can watch the UT game on any number of flat screen TVs scattered about the spacious inside restaurant and along the surrounding patio. DoubleDave’s is known for their amazing beer specials – where else can you get a pitcher of the world famous Lone Star for $6?
Abel’s has built a reputation as the best place to watch the Horns on game day in Central Austin. Known as the un-official viewing destination for UT away games, Abel’s on the Lake is great for home games as well, if you’re looking for a nice breezy bar on Lake Austin with stunning lakeside views. A spin-off of popular West Campus bar Cain and Abel’s, Abel’s on the Lake has over 60 beers on tap including 17 local brews, boat parking, and an exceptional variety of food including burgers, salads, sandwiches, and a brunch menu. Right next to Hula Hut at 3825 Lake Austin Blvd., Abel’s on the Lake is a fun-filled atmosphere in an exotic destination that is a perfect spot to watch the Texas Longhorns on game day.
Located at 2911 San Jacinto, the Crown and Anchor is a neighborhood bar and grill in the heart of North Campus. A UT game time hotspot for residents of North University and Hyde Park, Crown and Anchor serves up an extensive list of over 30 beers on tap as well as legendary burgers that consistently rank among Austin’s favorite bar food. They have several large HDTV’s showing the game and game day usually brings a crowd that spills out onto the outdoor dog-friendly deck and patio. Crown and Anchor has pool tables, video games and dartboards to keep you busy while watching the Horns.
