Best Places to Spot a Celebrity
From a college town to a tech hub to a live music capital, Austin has become known for so many different things. With SXSW, ACL Fest, concert tours, tons of famous musicians descend onto Austin on nearly a weekly basis. (Here’s a tumblr solely dedicated to Ryan Gosling at last year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest.) In addition, with Austin studios, and a burgeoning film scene, Austin has also been known as a hotspot for A-List Hollywood celebs either filming here or premiering a film here. Some even live here! Between our local stars and those visiting, there are several places around town you’re sure to spot a celebrity (if you’re at the right place right time).
Whole Foods Market Downtown – It seems this local attraction is where stars like to go grocery shopping. A lot of stars rent out condos downtown, and this place has way too much to offer a visiting celebrity. With it’s organic food bars, juice bar, and fresh produce, you just might find a celebrity here especially during SXSW Festival. I actually almost (literally) ran into Adrian Brody here and have heard countless other stories of friends having sightings.
Hotel San Jose – With hip, modern, quaint condo style hotel rooms, the Hotel San Jose hosts visiting celebrities year round. A hotel with a sense of privacy, this South Congress hot spot offers rooms that open up to a Zen/Southwestern style garden and patio with nightlife. If you don’t want to pay to stay here and do some celeb-spotting, try a glass of wine or a cocktail on a weekend evening where they have tasty appetizers and drinks poolside. Rumor has it Ryan Adams loves this place when he plays in Austin.
Austin Vintage Shops
If you lived in Austin for some time, you know that this town is ripe with vintage clothing and kitsch stores around town. From the vintage shops on South Congress and South First (Stag, Flashback Vintage, New Bohemia, New Brohemia) to the Drag (Cream Vintage, Buffalo Exchange), to a new crop of shops in the newly updated North Loop district (Room Service Vintage, Hog Wild Vintage), there are countless celebrity sightings throughout the year. Most recently, Austin favorite, Ryan Gosling was seen shopping at New Brohemia.
As far as local celebrities go, Paul Qui of Uchiko fame is the face of Austin’s culinary movement. His recent win on Bravo’s Top Chef catapulted him into the spotlight and now his restaurant (Uchiko) along with Tyson Cole’s Uchi are among the highest rated kitchens in the nation, and tourist, as well as celebrity, destinations.]
With Austin’s outdoor music and movie festival season upon us, there’s no doubt that celeb sightings will become common fare over the next couple of months. While it may be difficult to spot them in the crowds at the outdoor concerts, your luck will be better if you decide to attend the many after-parties that occur after Fantastic Fest, ACL, and Fun Fun Fun Fest.
