Fredericksburg is a well-known weekend destination for travelers coming from nearby Austin and San Antonio. The town was named in honor of Prince Frederick of Prussia and is known as the home of “Texas German”, a German dialect spoken by the first generations of settlers who did not learn English. A popular site for day trips from Austin, if you can swing going on a weekday, it will be much less crowded.
Climb to the top of this popular pink granite rock dome at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area for amazing views. Kids can borrow a Junior Ranger Explorer Pack to help them explore the area. It’s advisable to get there early in the morning as the parking lot can fill up quickly and the temperatures can rise quickly. Be sure to bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen. It’s also a great place to star gaze on a summer night.

Pick Your Own Peaches
Fredericksburg peaches are well-known in Central Texas and there are several pick-your-own farms located in and around Fredericksburg. Jensche Orchard offers the option to pick-your-own peaches, just outside of Fredericksburg. The orchard also sells fresh fruits and vegetables at the road side farmstand. The peach orchard has 20 varieties grown on over 3000 trees! Tip: Arrive early to work before the heat of the day, and bring a cooler with some ice to keep the peached cool if you plan to spend the day in town.

Old Tunnel State Park
From May through October, spectators gather at Old Tunnel State Park to watch up to 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasilienses mexicana) and 3,000 cave myotis (Myotis velifer) bats take flight at dusk. Bat-viewing opportunities are available seven nights a week, and nightly educational presentations are given Thursday through Sunday.

Just a few minutes outside of town, you’ll find Wildseed Farms, a family-owned wildflower farm where you can pick your own flowers, walk the trails, capture beautiful photos, shop for seeds and plants, and taste the wide range of products including jellies, jams, pickles, salsas and more available for purchase. Note: When saying hello to the Wildseed cats on location, make sure the kids don’t pet them as they can be a little feisty with little ones.

Need the kids to burn off some energy before the ride home? Visit this playground right on Main Street, close to all of the shops and restaurants of downtown Fredericksburg. There there are many climbing, swinging and balancing options.
