Tonight Texas will take on Arkansas in the AdvoCare Bowl in Houston, Texas. The game is sold out but there will be plenty of places to watch around town.

This will be your last opportunity to see Texas play this year.  For those that missed the controversy this weekend, the Arkansas head coach was photographed giving the “Horns Down” sign while shaking Charlie Strong’s hand. Needless to say some Texas fans are up in arms about this whole ordeal and are defiantly out for a win today!

There are countless places to catch the game tonight. A few of our favorites are The Tavern, Scholz, Black Sheep Lodge, Doc’s, Midway Field House, Bar 96,  Crown and Anchor Pub  , Abel’s on the Lake, The Park South Lamar, Draft Pick, Top Golf, Cover 3, Little Woodrow’s.

For the very first time, Austin is hosting the X Games.  The event takes place June 5-8 at the Circuit of the Americas, and it’s going to be bigger than ever. Austin’s X Games will be a lot more than just the competitions—nine separate festival villages will be featured, with bands, games, a skate ramp, kart racing, an ESPN Clubhouse, and lots more.

Austin’s X Games will be huge, so be sure to come prepared to have the most fun possible.  Here’s your X Games Preparedness List to make sure you stay happy and comfortable:

  1. Sensible footwear: You’ll be standing (and possibly dancing, riding go karts, skateboarding, etc.) all weekend, so be nice to your feet and wear something more substantial than flip-flops.
  2. Camping gear: Camping is allowed at the Austin X Games for a variety of fees that get you access to camping amenities. Find more info on the camping page.
  3. Sun defense: Yep, Austin’s hot, and the sun can be cruel over the course of a day spent outdoors. Bring plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and remember to reapply.
  4. Water bottle: You can’t bring outside food or drinks into the festival, but you can bring a water bottle to keep filled at the water refilling stations parked throughout the venue. Again, June in Austin can zap you of hydration, so don’t land yourself in the medical tent with a case of heat exhaustion.
  5. Camera: Tons of cool stuff will be happening all around you, so keep your phone handy or bring a camera to capture it all.

Where do I find out more?

Festival and bicycles in the same sentence, that’s so Austin. We are a city that is able to put together a festival for anything and this one celebrates several things that make Austin awesome.

Tonight at the Bicycle Film Festival they’ll be celebrating bikes through film, art and music.

Also, its National Grilled Cheese month and local, legendary  grilled cheese masters Burro Cheese Kitchen will be there serving up sammies like you’ve never had before.

Local BMX stud, Aaron Ross will be hanging out as well.

Unless you live under a rock, you’re probably familiar with the concept of donation-based yoga in Austin. Donation-based fitness boot camps, however, are a relatively new idea.

Recently named the ‘Best Outdoor Workout’ and ‘Best Boot Camp’ of 2013 by Austin Fit Magazine, Stronghorn Fitness is on the forefront of this new movement with their increasingly popular ‘Saturday Sweat Sessions.’ The concept is pretty simple; just show up at the Austin High School track at 10am with a yoga mat (or thick towel) and some water. No prior signup is required.

The workouts change weekly, but here’s an idea of what the hour will look like:

  • 10-15 minute dynamic warm-up (walking lunges, squats, jumping jacks)
  • 18-20 minute circuit style workout and high intensity interval training
  • 10-15 cool down with yoga, stretches and breathing

Last weekend, over 80 participants showed up for the first ‘Sweat Session’ of the year! Needless to say, this is a great way to help you achieve your fitness goals for 2014. And hey, maybe you’ll make some new friends in the process…

Follow Stronghorn Fitness on Facebook to stay in the loop.

Cost: Suggested donation of $10 but, “Everything is appreciated and nothing is expected.” According to Jess Martin (owner/trainer).

When: Tomorrow, January 11th at 10am (and every Saturday)

Love him, hate him, think it’s time for him to move on? It doesn’t matter we are city that lives and breaths Longhorn football and tonight is the last night Mack Brown will be coaching our beloved team.

Screen Shot 2013-12-29 at 3.59.04 PM

There are so many great moments in Texas football that I will remember under Mack. It will undoubtedly be a game played with a lot of heart as it would be great to see him end his Texas coaching career on a win! The Oregon Ducks are favored to win but I believe it’s anyone’s game.

While I’m sure that almost every bar with a TV will have the game on here are a few of my favorite places to watch games: Doc’s, Third Base, Gourmands, Little Woodrow’s, The Goodnight, Cover 3, Top Golf, Corner Bar, Scholz Garten, CU29, Haymaker and Black Sheep Lodge.

As always, Hook ‘ Em Horns.

When: today, December 30th

Kickoff: 5:45 p.m.

Throughout the course of the last 24 hours there has no doubt been tons of memories and flashbacks of great moments in Texas sports. For me, these are my top 3 Mack Brown moments. I could go on about his character, integrity and what he brought to the game, University and fans for hours but I digress. Texas Forever.

The 2011 Texas A&M Game. 25-27 win.  Texas scored a field goal at the end of the 4th quarter to seal the win in the last match up in the Texas/Texas A&M rivalry.

LASTY, this speech after they won the 2006 National Champion. The last minute is the best part and true testament to his character. “I don’t want this to be the best thing to ever happen in your life. When you’re 54 I don’t want you to say winning a football game is the best thing that has ever happened in my life. You’ll have it and you’ll be a champion the rest of your life, you make sure that’s one of the best sports things in your life but you promise me if you have enough about you to win a National Championship, you got enough about you to be a great citizen, a great role model, a great father and a great leader in your community. That’s what we’re looking for when you get out of here, that’s what we want.”

For a great list, check out what ESPN put together.

What are your favorite moments?

It’s the time of year most people abandon their fitness regimes. It’s cold, you already plan on overeating during the holidays, and you’ll get back at it in January. I’ve been there, but this year will be different. Rather than torturing myself come the new year, I’m going to be proactive and give myself a head start.

Jess Martin at Stronghorn Fitness will be my ally in this. He’s the founder of an awesome boot camp here in town that has opened multiple locations throughout the city. If you’ve never been to a boot camp, it’s probably the easiest way to stay motivated in reaching your goals. Both the instructors and the other students will push and encourage you to maximize your efforts. It’s also not a bad way to meet new people.

Still not convinced that this is for you? When you mention that you’re a follower of 365 Things Austin, they’ll give you a week to try out classes for FREE. Classes are held M-TH at 6:15am and 6:15 pm, Friday at 6:15am and Saturday at 9am.

Here’s a short video that may paint a better picture, but I promise that not everyone in the class looks like an Abercrombie model (but some of them do). People of all ages and fitness levels attend, and the classes really are a lot of fun.

Check out their website for more details, and feel free to email or call Jess with any questions you might have. Bring water and a Yoga mat if you have one!

See you out there.
