When people talk about the Austin music scene,  major festivals like South by Southwest (SXSW) and ACL are typically the big topics. But there’s another, smaller music festival that has been taking place for over ten years in Austin. Free Week was launched by Graham Williams (Margin Walker Presents) at the old Emo’s on Sixth and Red River and has since mushroomed into a highly anticipated annual event. Clubs all along and around Red River will open their doors for a few days of special shows. It’s an awesome way to check out some of the best bands and venues in Austin—and start the year off right. This year it runs from Thursday, January 2nd—Sunday, January 5th.

There are more quality shows booked than we have room to recommend to you. For a more complete list of Free Week shows, click here and here.

We do this every year and you should, too! Wake up and start 2020 right with a jump into the icy embrace of Barton Springs! Actually, we have it a little easier than some of our polar bear jumping neighbors from around the country, as Barton Springs stays at a constant 68 degrees. The water will actually be warmer than the air temperature! Regardless of that little detail, this is still a crazy way to start your day and the perfect way to set the tone for 365 more days filled with adventure, joy, and saying YES to life in Austin.

When: Wednesday, January 1, 2020

Time: 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
