4. BBQ Austin

What: If you live for the smokey stuff, as most of us do in Texas, don’t miss this chance to see and taste some of the best in the state. At BBQ Austin cities from all over Texas send their Champion BBQ Teams to compete in the Invitational Division for the title of “State of Texas BBQ Grand Champion.” Additionally, all teams compete for the title and purse of “BBQ Austin Grand Champion.”

In Austin, there truly is a festival for everything! Here’s three days of juggling, workshops, games, vendors, and shows in the heart of the city’s So-Co district.

Celebrating its 24th year, Jugglefest features (you guessed it!) juggling, unicycling, and related circus arts. Everyone is welcome to come on down to pick up the basics, learn some new tricks, meet some crazy people, or just chill out and watch.

This may come as a big surprise to you, but today there is a 100 percent chance of a wintry mix! That’s because the Hill Country Science Mill in Johnson City is having its second annual Snow Day. The outdoor Science & Art Park will be transformed into a winter wonderland with 20 tons of snow.

This is the perfect activity to get the whole family out of the house today. Go for a lovely drive and give the littlest Texans the kind of winter fun they rarely get to have.

Highlights include a live action ice sculpture, ice piano, snowball catapult launches, mini snowman building contest, snowball radar throws, and more.

Well you are seriously in luck, because Round Rock is being invaded by bull riders and giant monster trucks for an event like no other. It’s the TRAXXAS Monster Truck Destruction Tour! See incredible 10,000-pound, car-crushing giants compete in racing, wheelie contests, and then rock the house with amazing freestyle action. With names like BIGFOOT, SON OF BEAST, OLD SKOOL, and TUFF GUY you know these guys mean business.

In addition to the trucks, catch the nation’s top bull riders competing against the largest professional athlete in the world: the America Pro Rodeo Bucking Bull!

Go back to school in the mid-1800’s at Zilker Botanical Garden this weekend. It’s September and the beginning of a brand new school year! Bring the kids to the Botanical Garden to see what it was like for kids in school in the 1800’s.


Activities include:

  • Learn old time weather saying that pioneers used to help forecast the weather and see which signs of changing weather you can find throughout the Botanical Garden.
  • Tour the Swedish cabin and see the Esperanza Schoolhouse to learn some new pioneer skills and practice calligraphy.
  • Fashion a feather quill pen and write a letter to a loved one on antiqued paper, complimented with natural inks derived from local plants and resources and then seal it with a traditional wax seal stamp as the icing on the cake!

Join PBS KIDS’ favorite problem-solving duo Peg and Cat for “The Peg + Cat Mystery Hour.” This special hour of math mysteries kicks off with a spooky Friday-the-13th problem. Then in “The Disappearing Art Problem,” museum guards Peg and Cat are on the case as shapes are being stolen right off the paintings! And finally there’s 1+1 = 2 adventures aboard the Peg + Cat Express, where missing lollipops, bananas, symphonies, and chickens can only mean: there’s a thief on the train!  Reserve your seat with a donation of $1-3, with all ticket sales benefiting education programs at your local PBS station.  This is an all-ages show with Baby Day rules – noisy young fans won’t be asked to leave the theater but we do ask that cellphones and other devices stay dark.

Family Day at the UMLAUF
