Sunday Morning Math Circle

Mar 10, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Free

The Sunday Morning Math Circle will be in room 5.104 of Robert Lee Moore Hall on the campus of UT on Sunday March 10, 12-2pm. The event is absolutely free and will feature a talk by Sebastian Schulz, a PhD student at the University of Texas, who will lead students in a game which will teach them what it means to add an infinite number of numbers together! This event is targeted for 6th-12th graders and requires no mathematical prerequisites to be enjoyed!

The specific details of the talk are: We will be looking into a fun little mathematical game called “Escape of the Clones”: Given a few pieces (Clones) on an infinite chess board that are allowed to “move” only in a certain way, is it possible for them to leave a certain section of the board (the “prison”). In a hands-on way this game will illustrate many advanced mathematical concepts, such as infinite series and invariants, that I am planning to give a hint of.
