Andrea Ariel Dance Theatre and multimedia artist Yuliya Lanina are premiering new, innovative and multimedia performances of live music, dance, Soundpainting and animatronic sculpture with “Locked-in” and “This is a Test of the Internal Emergency Broadcast.” Both performances will run June 21 through June 24 at the Museum of Human Achievement (located behind Canopy Austin on Springdale Road).

“Locked-in” explores our relationship to our devices, and how they have changed, advanced and altered our world and our lives. Directed by award-winning choreographer Andrea Ariel, the new performance combines choreographed dance and live compositions of directed improvisations with original music composed by Andy Nolte.

The show opens with artist Yuliya Lanina’s premiere of “This is a Test of the Internal Emergency Broadcast System,” a 20-minute multimedia performance. Lanina’s animations, sculptures and live movement will be accompanied by original music by Vladimir Rannev, an award-winning Russian avant-garde composer. It explores the mechanized nature of human life and its state of perpetual unrest, all the while poking fun at our fascination with the dark and animalistic parts of the human psyche.

Modern Rocks Gallery has generated worldwide buzz for its exclusive collections of the best in rock photography since it opened in East Austin and online four years ago. And, to celebrate Modern Rocks Gallery’s fourth birthday, owner Steven Walker is launching “The Art Of The Contact Sheet,” a curated collection of large format contact sheet prints of David Bowie, AC/DC, Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Ramones and more, taken by leading rock photographers both past and present.

The show opens on April 27 with a celebration of the gallery’s fourth birthday along with these iconic images, including many exclusives and a few surprises.

The “Art of the Contact Sheet” features the work by the legendary Columbia Records photographer, Don Hunstein, as well as the photographer responsible for the iconic David Bowie Aladdin Sane album cover, Brian Duffy. Other leading music photographers on show include Kirk Weddle, Tracy Anne Hart, Alan Messer, Allan Ballard, Matt Anker, David Corio and more.

Contact sheets are a tool that dates back to the days of shooting on film, showing the whole roll of film on one sheet of photographic paper, to help the photographer select which images to print.

“Not only does the contact sheet tell us the full story behind an iconic image, these visually stunning and often thought-provoking prints give a unique insight into the photographer’s artistic process and vision,” said Walker. “It’s fascinating to see how the photographer’s eye wanders, how the mind works, and how a scene evolves on the journey towards the final image.”

The work of Hunstein, Duffy, Hart, Messer, Ballard, Anker, Corio and others will be showcased at an opening event from 7 – 10 pm, Friday, April 27 at the Austin gallery which also serves as the gallery’s fourth birthday party. Cocktails will be provided by our friends at Provision Spirits with their award-winning Ben Milam Whiskey.
