Next weekend the American Le Mans Series is coming to Austin for a weekend of racing and fun. You don’t have to be a racing fanatic to recognize one of the gentlemen in the driver’s seat. Grey’s Anatomy heart throb, Patrick Dempsey (Dr. McDreamy) will be racing his team’s car.
The way I see it, this is a win win for guys and girls: Guys can use to this as a selling point to get their special ladies to the race, and girls can get tickets for their guys acting like it’s the race that they interested in (we won’t tell).
This weekend of racing is extremely fan friendly as there is an opportunity for fans to walk around the paddock, pit lanes and check out the cars, take pictures, and get an up close look at the track. There will also be opportunities to get autographs from the drivers as well (I know which line I’ll be in). There is also a kids festival with a carnival complete with rides and concessions, a formula drift demo and sport bike demo.
Thanks to my Dad, I have been a Formula One fan most of my life. But until last November, I never had the opportunity to see a race in person. From the second I stepped foot on the grounds at Circuit of the Americas, my love of racing skyrocketed. The experience was absolutely incredible and has peaked my interest in other races out at the track as well.
I am especially excited about the American Le Mans coming in a few weeks. The Le Mans is a multi class racing event with everything from technically advanced prototypes to exotic cars and sports cars like Porsche, Ferrari, and the SRT Viper. What’s crazy about Le Mans is that while their are five different classes of vehicles with varying top-speeds, they all race on the same track at the same time!
One of my favorite races to watch is the 24 Hours of Le Mans, because it is just incredible to me to think that those guys race for a full day straight. Don’t worry though, the Austin Le Mans is a much more manageable six hours of racing excitement. This video does a great job of summarizing the rules and generally explaining why Le Mans is so much fun to watch!
It’s sure to be a weekend of awesome cars and lots of racing. Fun Fact: Actor turned Driver Patrick Dempsey will also be competing in this event!
We wrote about the big Formula 1™ race at Circuit of The Americas™ last year because of the very cool Official program that is available through Circuit of The Americas Experiences. The F1 United States Grand Prix exceeded everyone’s expectations this past November, hosting the world’s most prestigious motorsports competition in spectacular fashion and winning “Sports Event of the Year” from the respected industry publication Sports Business Journal.
This year, the big race is set for November 14-17, and a major celebrity component has been added to the Official program with the unveiling of the Legends Club, where motorsports icons Mario Andretti and Jackie Stewart will mix with the fans, Formula 1™ driver Esteban Gutiérrez will make an appearance and where American Idol winner Taylor Hicks will perform a concert on Thursday night. The Legends Club, presented by Circuit of The Americas Experiences, is a 20,000-square foot, climate-controlled hospitality venue where guests will eat, drink and relax on the weekend after viewing the world’s fastest cars from seating at varied track locations.
The Taylor Hicks concert immediate follows a behind-the-scenes tour of the $400 million, state-of-the-art facility, culminating in a private party in the Legends Club and the performance by the 2006 American Idol winner. Heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar and a meet and greet with Circuit of The Americas’ Ambassador, Mario Andretti, will also be part of the scene.
A special “lunch with a legend” program with former Formula 1™ superstar Jackie Stewart is Friday’s highlight as the three-time world driving champion and safety advocate will do a question and answer session in addition to signing autographs and interacting with attendees during the gourmet lunch and cocktail event.
The Legends Club will remain open Saturday and Sunday, featuring interactive experiences, race simulators, simulcast television coverage, gourmet food and premium bars. A special appearance by Formula 1 driver Esteban Gutiérrez of Team Sauber, one of the sport’s promising stars, is also scheduled for Saturday.
The race weekend culminates with the F1 United States Grand Prix on Sunday and America’s most internationally prominent sporting event is sure to attract even more big-name celebrities with the inauguration of the Legends Club and the new VIP Celebrity Skybox venue (some seats available to the general public).
See you there!
