pet of the week

Name: Kola
Sex: Spayed Female
Breed: Labrador Retriever Mix
Age: 5 years old
Animal ID: A597150
Location: Kennel 431

Kola was found by a good Samaritan as a stray dog and brought to AAC. We found her to be severely overweight and quickly put her on a restrictive diet. She has since lost over 30 pounds and is feeling great! Kola walks great on leash, seems housetrained and is very social with all people.

Be sure to always feed your dog the best dog food you can afford, something high in protein and grain free seems to be well received and digested by all dogs! This girl would be an easy adoption for a 1st time pet owner or for someone who appreciates an easy going girl!

Kola was Pet of the Week on KXAN> http://kxan.com/2014/07/06/pet-of-the-week-kola/

Name: Jack
Sex: Neutered Male
Breed: Chihuahua Mix
Age: 2 year old
Animal ID: A669936
Location: Condo A2

 Jack2

Little Jack here was found running around on East 51st street. He was underweight and very fearful. He has been with us over 3 weeks now and we have found him to be charming, playful and a great companion to go for walks with. He lives easily with other small dogs and rides great in the car. He has tested positive for Heart Worms and needs to be treated for that. Speak to our own personal veterinarian about treatment and preventative. If you are considering adopting a pet, come meet Jack!

Name: Wilson
Sex: Neutered Male
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Age: 3 year old
Days in Shelter/Foster Care: over 165
Animal ID: A668505
Location: Cat Condo H3

Wilson

Wilson is a large, affectionate cat who loves petting and attention, and he has a cute “crinkled” ear that gives him a roguish look, especially since he’s also got a “tuxedo” on! Seen here with volunteer Suzanne, Wilson will readily follow you around and tell you all about how he feels.  He will do best in a home looking for a cat with a big, confident, self-assured personality and he definitely needs a home without dogs – he just doesn’t seem to like the canine set.  Wilson tested positive for FIV, but that’s easily manageable with normal pet-cat care: living indoors and having regular check-ups with a vet. And for all the reasons stated and more, Wilson is a STAFF pick!

If Wilson is not the pet for you, check out one of our previous Pet of the Week’s.

Name: Smiley
Sex: Spayed Female
Breed: Flat Coated Retriever
Age: 1 year old
Days in Shelter/Foster Care: over 100
Animal ID: A655092
Location: Kennel T 02

Smiley

Take one look at Smiley and you will know how she got her name. Grinning from ear to ear with that signature smile. Smiley came in as a stray back in May 2013 with some knee injuries. She has undergone 2 surgeries and is scheduled for a more invasive one in the near future. Here is what this adorable gal needs:

  • A safe home where she can heal from her future surgery
  • A dog savvy person or people( please, no children under 16)who will work with her on a few of her behavioral challenges such as:
  • Socialization and confidence building with human beings. She warms up quickly and bonds to people but will need you to be the type of person that will expose her to other dog savvy people.
  • Basic obedience training. It seems Smiley did not receive this as a puppy so she could benefit from learning sit, stay and any other basics.
  • Helping her with boundaries surrounding food and treats. Using food as a reward for commands and obedience.
  • Setting her up for success by offering her a stable environment to learn how to be a companion and by allowing supervised play dates with other well balanced dogs.

We are offering the foster or adopter behavioral support and will help you help her heal both medically and socially.
Smiley has been treated for Heartworms and is up to date on Vaccinations and is spayed. She would be best as an only dog.
If you think you can help this black beauty, please contact Austin Animal Center @ www.austinanimalcenter.org
