    Every Tuesday, The Meteor is hosting Tasting Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. where guests can experience a weekly theme or maker of wine, beer or cider. For $15, four pours are served with a guided tasting experience and the opportunities to purchase select bottles to go for $15 off.     Our East Austin Happy Hour research was truly an experience that we think everyone should recreate. For this post, we really wanted to give you a sense of what it’s like popping around some local east side spots. Continue reading after—we still list the rest of our favorite spots!

    Bufalina

    We started off at Bufalina, where we had the $5 wine and 50% off pizza. The Red Pie add pepperoni was for awesome—really thin and crispy Neopolitan pizza; or as our founder Kristy calls it, “Skinny Pizza”!

    Genre: Pizza

    Location: E. Cesar Chavez

    Time: Wednesday-Sunday, 4–5:30 p.m.

    Special: 50% off pizza, $5 wine by the glass, 50% off bottles under $100

    Mongers

    With some time to kill before our next spot opened, we decided to stop into another all-time favorite, Mongers. The owners, Julie and Shane, are always so welcoming and it truly is just like your neighborhood fish monger with fresh, seasonal dishes. We love the seasonal crudos, ceviches, and oysters! Be sure to ask for Forrest for your server.

    Genre: Seafood/Raw Bar

    Location: E. Cesar Chavez

    Time: Tuesday-Friday, 4–6 p.m., Mondays all day – 1/2 off oysters, 1/2 off select wine bottles

    Special:$5 wine glasses, $6 apps, $1 off oysters, $1 off beer, $2 off sangria carafes

    Favorites: Peel & Eats, Angels on Horseback, any daily crudo, poké or ceviche, lobster roll, Fish Dip (get crackers and hot sauce on the side, too with the chips—its a game-changer!) and of course, Lobster Mac & Cheese with black truffle and cheddar

    Mongers Market + Kitchen

    Pitchfork Pretty

    Next, we went on to try Pitchfork Pretty for the first time. Boy were we missing out! The vibe was amazing and they had great service, plenty of parking, an excellent covered patio area, inventive cocktails, and innovative dishes. We have decided to become regulars of this place! Our favorite was the crudo served over a seasonal sorbet. Sounds weird, but the sorbet made it so icy cold and delicious!

    Genre: New American/Southern

    Location: E. Cesar Chavez

    Time: Monday-Friday, 5–6 p.m.

    Special: $3 off cocktails and beer, $12 off bottles of wine, 1/2 off snacks and appetizers

    Favorites: Snapper served over seasonal sorbet with habenero oil, Pimento & Cheese with Crab Crackers (kind of like pork rinds), and the Money Moves —a gin drink with averna (herby liquor), cardamom, and orange

    On Wednesdays, you can pop over during HH to Sour Ducks Farmers Market from 4-7 PM!

    Juniper

    We finally ended our night at JuniperAs if we weren’t stuffed enough yet, we ordered the Cacio de Pepe which we learned is Italian for cheese and pepper. It was so creamy and delicious. We walked right in on a Friday night and the service was exquisite. The hostess went out of her way to make sure we found a seat at the bar right away, and the bartenders even gave us complimentary gelato! We earned ourselves a Gustavo spin class after this night of feasting.

    Genre: Italian

    Special: Amore Monday – $10 meat and cheese board with $12 entrees of Spaghetti, Chicken Confit, Bucatini, or Pesto Genovese, with $6 Spritzes

    East Side Favorites

    Mexican Favorites:

    Lichas

    Sit on the patio and get the queso (more like fundito in a skillet served with tortillas), and the Vampiro (tequila with grapefruit soda, jalapeno, and a spicy rim)! Pop over to Native Hostel to continue your HH.

    Genre: Mexican

    Location: E. 6th

    Time: Tuesday-Friday, 4–6 p.m.

    Special: $5 Happy Hour – $5 margaritas, palomas, mezcal mules, etc., $5 quesadillas and sopecitos (thick corn tostadas), $5 Huaraches (corn masa base and topping), $5 corn or sweet potato verduras

    Favorites: All of the margaritas! Choriqueso or Champiqueso, Melted Queso Asadero in a Skillet served with Tortillas; Ceviche with Coconut Cream and Mango Pico; all of the tacos are great—Veggie, Pastor with Pineapple, Chimichurri Flank Steak and Lengua with Guajillo-Peanut salsa.

    Lichas Queso

    Suerte

    Go right when they open and order all of the HH snackcidents and the taco of the day, share as a group! Their menu is always changing and seasonal. They also have parking in the parking garage!

    Genre: Mexican

    Location: E. 6th

    Time: Every Day, 5–6 p.m., Mezcal Mondays for half-priced mezcal drinks

    Grizzeldas

    Go early on Tuesdays and get the $5 Grizz Mizz (Pink Margarita), the $3 Ceviche Tostada and $7 Tacos of the Day (2). There is a ton of parking on Tillery Street.

    Join them for “Happy Time” and have a mini dim sum with hip hop music playing and inventive cocktails flowing. Get the Rangoons, Chili Wontons, and Mala Fried Chicken. We also love their daily dumplings that are seasonal and always changing.

    Walk over to King Bee on 12th after for a Frozen Bee’s Knees—gin, lemon, honey, plus pizza.

    Lou’s

    Another MMH spot. They have 1/2 off bottles of grab-and-go wine on Tuesdays. If you live on the East Side, this would be a great deal to go stock up on wine for your place. This is also the only retail spot (outside of new Swedish Hill) in Austin where you can buy the June’s Rosé!

    Salty Sow

    Go early and sit at a tall table in the bar area by the window, get the Truffled Deviled Eggs, Honey Rosemary Dipped Fried Chicken with a Homeade Biscuit, Duck Fat Fries with a 110 Minute Egg & Aioli, and the Crispy Brussel Sprout Leaves with Golden Raisins. Drink it all down with a Curly Tail (spicy marg) or Flying Pig (play on a French 75). They have a huge food selection on the HH menu and they’re all shareable small plates.     Go on a Tuesday with friends, sit in the bright, beautiful bar area, order a 1/2 off bottle of wine (cheapest would be the Rosé from Burgundy $14/bottle) and get the Parker House Rolls, Baked Ricotta, and Smoked Salmon Board. This is one of the earlier starting HHs in town, so we like doing a 3 p.m. Friday situation, too! Plenty of parking.

    Downtown Austin is flooded with high end restaurants with steep prices. However, we have researched the best happy hour menus that will allow you to have an upscale experience for a fraction of the cost. These are some of our favorite restaurants (and happy hours) in the city!

    Trulucks

    Sit at a cocktail table by the window, get the shrimp cocktail and the Pretty in Pink!

    Genre: Seafood

    Swift’s Attic

    Get the Cuidado spicy tequila cocktail, and make sure you ask for Jonas as your server!

    Pop in after a class at SoulCycle spin class or Wanderlust Yo Strong with Gustavo and grab a healthy dinner!

    South Austin Happy Hours in the 04

    We are so excited for a full guide to the 78704 Happy Hour scene. For those of you that don’t know what “the 04′” is, it is the neighborhood in south Austin for the 78704 zip code that includes South Congress, South 1st, South Lamar, Barton Springs, and Riverside (west of I-35). A lot of the 365 family lives in the 04 and we frequent these very restaurants. We wanted to research other spots where we aren’t regulars to give our readers the full picture. We did a lengthy research day (tough job) and found some a few new gems. What we love about the 04, is the history and culture you can find around every corner.

    Perla’s

    Our favorite thing about Perla’s is the patio. There is a giant Oak Tree in the middle keeping it pretty shaded and it has very Northeast Hamptons vibes. Perla’s has fish flown in daily so it is very fresh and seasonal cuisine with coastal cocktails, and bright and fun wines. Go sit on the patio and get the daily frozen drink, share the lobster roll and fries, get the lobster shells and cheese, and if you are with a group, definitely share the Poco Platter, it has a little bit of everything!

    Elizabeth Street Cafe

    Another MMH Spot—like a neighborhood Vietnamese cafe with a French bakery (get the daily macaroons). They have everything from croissants and spring rolls to pho, curries, and fun cocktails. Get the crunchy chicken spring rolls (the dipping sauces are to die for), ginger chile oil dumplings, mango cucumber salad, the 1/2 off banh mi, one of the seasonal punches (or ask for the Shady Blonde—it’s an off-menu brunch cocktail with gin, lillet blanc, grapefruit, and thyme over crushed ice). Sit on the patio if it is nice! They also have plenty of street parking.

    Lenoir

    Sit outside in the wine garden—it backs up to Bouldin Creek and is so green, lush, and beautiful. All snacks and small plates are between $5–14, get the smoked fish tartine ($11), daily bread ($5), blue corn hushpuppies ($8), crudo ($14), and the gnocchi ($9). Any bottle under $80 is half off, so split one with friends!

    To keep the party going in the Bouldin Creek area, pop over to Mattie’s at Green Pastures after for a drink on the lawn.

    Chef came from Asti, Mulberry & Haddingtons—beautiful green patio, large bar area to sit at as well. Get the seasonal pizza, sit on the patio or in the bar, get the $5 Aperol Spritz, the daily crudo, and the crispy broccoli!

    Aviary Wine & Kitchen

    One of our all-time favorites! This used to be a furniture store that also sold wine, but they quickly realized they were selling more wine than furniture. Owners Marco Fiorilo and John Coronado converted it to a beautiful open-air kitchen with a raw bar, and a highly curated wine program. The menu is always changing and has a ton of seasonal small plates. We have never had a bad dish here! Go right when they open, expect amazing service, try wines you’ve never heard off, and cheeses you can’t pronounce. Get multiple of the seasonal small dishes, whatever the seasonal pasta is, and you HAVE to get a dessert.

    Pop over to Backbeat on S. Lamar after for a nightcap and an awesome view of the skyline.

    Location: South Lamar (Next to Black Sheep Lodge). Get your nails done at Queen Spa and then pop over!

    Uchi

    If you haven’t been to Uchi, the Happy Hour is a great way test the waters. Started by James Beard award winner, Tyson Cole, they now have four locations, including Denver and Dallas. Cole started working as a dishwasher at Mushashino in Austin and worked his way up to chef. He trained for 10 years in Japan and then at Sushi Bond in NYC before starting Uchi in 2003. Everything is amazing but getting any of the daily fresh Nigiri and Sashimi specials, the Hamachi Cure, Karage Chicken and Hand rolls are a great start for HH!

    Our favorite thing to do is walk over to Eberly either while you wait for a table, or after your HH (get the $8 Mac and Cheese from Eberly if you’re still hungry after small sushi plates!).

    We love this patio! Bring your dog, get a ranch water (add jalapenos), the queso, apple guacamole (make it healthy by adding sliced jicama and carrot sticks), brussels, beets, and elotes, and we love the kale caesar and power/super bols for lunch!     Junes

    Named after June Rodil, a master sommelier (one of only 24 female master somms in the world) and former Beverage Director for MMH, this place has cool vibes. They are also known for their signature June’s Brut Rosé, which is the perfect mix of still and sparkling with a light pink, slightly orange color. Sit on the patio if it’s nice and order a bottle of the June’s Rosé—split between two people on HH it is $12/each, so cheap! Get the carpaccio, split the burger or fried chicken sandwich with fries, and definitely get a monster cookie for dessert. Oh, and you might as well throw a June’s candle on your tab (they are burning in the bathroom). It is the best smell ever.

    Eberly

    Eberly started by a few Austinites who used to live in NYC and had a favorite bar there called the Cedar Tavern. When it closed they purchased the bar, deconstructed it and moved it into storage in 2006. They patiently waited for the right location and eventually purchased this old print shop. It is huge – with a large front restaurant, atrium in the middle that can seat large parties, the Cedar Tavern in the back (where we like to sit for HH) with more of a lounge feel, and multiple private party spaces including a rooftop.

    Genre: New American

    Location: South Lamar

    Time: Tuesday-Friday, 5–7 p.m., Sunday and Monday, all night

    Special: $7 cocktails, $7 wine, $4 beer

    Favorites: Food discounts are not included on on HH but, the full menu is available. We love the $4 whole wheat sourdough bread with house made garlic honey butter, the $8 giant shells and cheese, the fluke crudo with preserved lemon, sweety drop peppers and fresno chili; the grilled octopus with romesco and arugula; cornmeal hushpuppies with andouille sausage, green lentil jambapaya & shaved ricotta salata; and of course the pizzas – the calabrese with sausage & peppadew peppers, and the republic with pepperoni and jalapenos!

    Winebelly

    We love this on a rainy or cold day, sit inside, get the truffle fries, shishitos, meat board (and chicken liver mousse if you’re up for it), the wagyu sliders with bacon jam, and the tempura eggplant fries with truffle honey glaze. They have an extensive wine list here so you really can’t go wrong with anything you pick!

    Odd Duck

    We love Odd Duck’s story. Started by Bryce Gilmore (son of Jack Allen of Jack Allen’s Kitchen Restaurants), it originally started as a trailer before opening Barleyswine on S. Lamar as his first brick-and-mortar. Everything is locally sourced, and when this was just a trailer, Gilmore used to frequent farmer’s markets every weekend to get local ingredients. Still today everything is local—they now own Barleyswine (relocated to N. Burnet) and Sour Duck Market on E. 12th Street, which is the bakery for all restaurants. You have to try the sourdough bread! Everything else changes constantly with the seasonal ingredients but our favorites are below.

    Event Booze

    If your venue is BYOB there are a ton of great options in the Austin area. Also a great time to start thinking about whether you want a full bar, beer and wine only or a mixture of beer, wine, small bar with basic liquors like vodka, whiskey, tequila, and then having a signature cocktail. Doing a partial bar can still ensure your guests have ability for fun cocktails and a small liquor selection without breaking the bank. When formulating your signature cocktails, try to tie it back to something personal like naming after a hometown, sporting team, or college – adds a little something extra!

    Twin Liquors has case discounts on wine and sparkling year round, and great wine selections. Some of their newer stores are massive and the staff is always very attentive and helpful when making selections. Tons of locations!

      Join us at Juliet Italian Kitchen for a four-course dinner with pairings, with special guest Giovanni Mazzei, the current export manager of Marchesi Mazzei and the eldest son of Fillippo Mazzei. From the age of 14, Mazzei was already working the fields during harvest and getting involved with winemaking in his family’s wineries. The dinner will take place on Thursday, October 17, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Menu highlights include pan seared redfish, brown butter gnocchi, pork osso buco and espresso ganache.         For the second year, The Infinite Monkey Theorem and Can’d Aid team up for some “people powered do-goodery” as volunteers come together to build and donate brand new bicycles to an entire class of first graders at Govalle Elementary School. To help raise funds for the program, the winery is hosting a happy hour at their new East Austin location on Friday, September 27 from 6 to 9pm. Guests can try their luck with a ‘Wine Pull’ featuring a range of prizes found on the bottom of every wine can, as well as a silent auction to benefit the cause. For a $10 donation, guests can also “pay to spray” and leave their spray-painted permanent mark on the winery wall. Additionally, a portion of proceeds from all wine sales throughout the evening will be donated to Can’d Aid and guests are encouraged to come early and stay late to celebrate as the Silent Disco kicks off at 9pm.
