winey Archives - 365 Things to Do in Austin, TX

Moonlight Harvest will kick off the 42nd Annual Harvest Festival featuring the Blessing of the Vines, followed by an evening of grape picking and stomping in the Messina Hof Estate Vineyard. Dinner will feature a fabulous vineyard cuisine buffet with a wide selection of complimentary wines for guests to enjoy. Each ticket includes grape picking & stomping, a Harvest t-shirt and the reserved dinner buffet.

Sip a glass of Sparkling Wine as Messina Hof winemaker and CEO, Paul Bonarrigo leads you around the estate while hearing the history of the Bonarrigo Family and the winery. View antiques, machinery, awards and images that tell the story of our humble beginning to being the most awarded winery in Texas. You will be introduced to growing, fermenting, barrel-aging and blending our award-winning wines, and will taste wine directly from the tanks and barrels to better understand the process. And finally, you will be treated to an appetizer and 3-course meal paired with award-winning Messina Hof wine in our beautiful, candlelit Cellar Room.

Bring the family out for a fun-filled day of picking and stomping the very grapes that go into making Messina Hof’s award-winning Port. Stay for the Hill Country Big Kahuna Contest, barrel tasting and special Harvest brunch. You’ll also receive a souvenir “Harvest Crew” t-shirt signed with you very own purple stomping feet. We can’t wait to share this winemaking experience with you. While you’re picking, be on the lookout for the most unique grape cluster and enter the “Big Kahuna” contest. Before the stomp, all entries will not only present their cluster to the audience but will also have to perform a special talent. Whether singing, dancing or showing off those professional wine tasting skills—each entry will perform their talent and the audience will determine the winner.

Known for their Murder Mysteries, Messina Hof is excited to present Terror in Tahiti. Somewhere in the tropics between the Port of Indecision and Southwest of Disorder, you’ll find that murder meets mayhem and the intrigue begins. Each Murder Mystery Dinner is led by a thematic host, who will “set the stage” and guide you through the story. Not only will you be treated to a fabulous three course dinner, but each course is expertly paired with one of Messina Hof’s award-winning wines. In between each course, each character will be able to interact and collect clues as to who the murdered is. Or is it you? If so, then make sure you’re clever enough to avoid suspicion.

NEWSFLASH: I like wine. As far as adult beverages go, wine is probably my favorite. For years now, I’ve been dying to check out a local winery; and Driftwood’s Duchman Family Winery has a Viognier that’s actually one of my favorite white wines right now. So I thought this would be a great place to head out to for the first of my Hill Country wine tastings.

The beautiful estate is only about 30 minutes from Central Austin- much more manageable than the wineries in Fredericksburg. And the grounds feel more like Napa than Central Texas. The oasis like setting is a place that I could get lost in, and actually did get lost in for few hours and glasses. We did a private tour (costs $15 and includes 6 tasting, but you have to book ahead) that was both fun and informative. I learned so much about the history of the winery, the process of making wine, and even got to look around the cellar.

While we were there, there was a bridal shower and a wedding taking place, so this is a great venue to keep in mind for those types of events. However, you don’t need to save visiting for a special occasion, this place is equally great for checking out on a relaxing weeknight or Sunday afternoon.

They currently have a fall ‘Movie Under The Stars’ series that makes for the perfect evening of tasting wines, and catching a classic movie. Admission is $15 and includes a ticket for wine and popcorn. They also have wines by the glass and bottle available for purchase. Movies are shown on the lawn, so feel free to bring a picnic (don’t forget the cheese), a blanket and your dog! This would be an awesome date night, or a great way to get the girls together for a night out!
