This was a list item last year, but it’s one of those things that deserves to be on here every year. I think this festival is one of the coolest things to do in Austin. There’s something about flying a kite that reminds you how great the little things can be.

To start off, it’s America’s oldest continuously-running kite festival. They’ve got it down, and you couldn’t ask for a better Sunday.

Thank You Walt Neuschaefer for this picture from your entry in the photo contest last year!

The food lineup this year might be the best yet. There are tons of options, but a few highlights are Kebabalicious, fantastic funnel cakes, longhorn fried rice, snow cones, gyros and many, many other delicious things to snack on while you fly your kite. If you want to bring your own lunch, feel free to pack a picnic, but just remember that glass containers are not allowed!

There’s a kite flying contest, but they must be homemade kites to be eligible. The contest starts at 1 p.m. Dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a leash.

This is something Austinites of all ages must experience!

It’s also time for one of my favorite photo contests of the year — The Zilker Kite Festival Contest! To enter, upload (do not post a link!) your picture to the “365 Picture’s” page. Whatever picture has the most “likes” by Wednesday at 8 p.m. will be the winner. So don’t forget your camera! I cannot wait to start seeing pictures!

I have to say it was worth the week wait because the weather could not be better for Austin’s 82nd Annual Kite Festival.  The festival normally falls on the first weekend in March every year but was postponed this year due to weather. This is a FREE event, needless to say the best way to spend your Sunday in Austin!

It is such an experience and has been called one of the best Kite Festivals in the United States. They have so many kites you really have to see it to take it all in, you can even participate in kite contests – only homemade kites are eligible to enter!

Dogs are welcome as well – but keep in mind that there is a lot going on and the focus is definitely on the kites! This is one of the best places to dress up your pooch, have them sport the doggie t-shirt.

Also, do not forget to pack a picnic just no glass!
WARINING: Barton Springs Road will be closed from 9am to 6pm today for the festival. They will have shuttle buses that will be picking people up at State Garage “E” (1604 Colorado St.) The Palmer Events Center will also parking garage on Barton Springs Road (east of Lamar) will have all day parking available for $7.00.

Zilker Park is located:
Just south of the River on Barton Springs Road (Trust me, you won’t miss it – the kites will guide you!)

Sundays do not get any better than this – so check it out it will not disappoint! Another list item that you have to experience before you have true Austinitie status!
