Spring Holidays Fair

This day-long annual event is held at UT Austin with a goal of informing students, parents, teachers and community members from across the state about the importance of the public research institution and higher education in Texas. All ages are welcome to experience robust research experiences, hands-on demonstrations and experiments, and participate in the richness of the university’s scholarship and knowledge. FREE!


 

2016 Zilker Kite Festival

When: Sunday, March 6, 10 am to 5 pm

Where: Zilker Park, 2100 Barton Springs Road, Austin

Kids of all ages and their families will enjoy the wide open space of Zilker Park to fly their kites. Bring your own kite or sign up for the kite workshop and then enter one of the kite flying competitions. Head over to the Zilker Hillside Theater to enjoy live music for families during the Moss Fest. FREE!


 

Free First Sunday: Texas Independence Day

When: Sunday, March 6, 12-5 pm

Where: Bullock Museum, 1800 Congress Avenue, Austin

Families can explore the Story of Texas through three floors of exhibits that showcase artifacts from around the state in addition to celebrating Texas’ storied past and exciting future through performances, hands-on activities, trivia, and more! Special family programs from 12-3pm combine art creation, presentations by partner organizations, and gallery activities.


 

Sunday Funday: Invisible Ink

When: Sunday, March 6, 1 to 4 pm

Where: Neill-Cochran House Museum, 2310 San Gabriel Street, Austin

These fun events, held the first Sunday of select months, feature historically-inspired activities for children, scavenger hunts in the historic house, and informal tours of the museum. FREE!

The day has finally arrived for the nation’s oldest kite festival in Zilker Park! This is one of the best events in Austin every year. It’s a great family festival, and one that everyone can enjoy.

Warning: parking is a major issue! This festival always draws a crowd, so plan to ride your bike or take one of the shuttles.

This was a list item last year, but it’s one of those things that deserves to be on here every year. I think this festival is one of the coolest things to do in Austin. There’s something about flying a kite that reminds you how great the little things can be.

To start off, it’s America’s oldest continuously-running kite festival. They’ve got it down, and you couldn’t ask for a better Sunday.

The food lineup this year might be the best yet. There are tons of options, but a few highlights are Kebabalicious, fantastic funnel cakes, longhorn fried rice, snow cones, gyros and many, many other delicious things to snack on while you fly your kite. If you want to bring your own lunch, feel free to pack a picnic, but just remember that glass containers are not allowed!  

There’s a kite flying contest, but they must be homemade kites to be eligible. The contest starts at 1 p.m. Dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a leash.

This is something Austinites of all ages must experience!

It’s also time for one of my favorite photo contests of the year — The Zilker Kite Festival Contest! To enter, upload (do not post a link!) your picture to the “365 Picture’s” page. Whatever picture has the most “likes” by Wednesday at 8 p.m. will be the winner. So don’t forget your camera! I cannot wait to start seeing pictures!

I have to say it was worth the week wait because the weather could not be better for Austin’s 82nd Annual Kite Festival.  The festival normally falls on the first weekend in March every year but was postponed this year due to weather. This is a FREE event, needless to say the best way to spend your Sunday in Austin!

It is such an experience and has been called one of the best Kite Festivals in the United States. They have so many kites you really have to see it to take it all in, you can even participate in kite contests – only homemade kites are eligible to enter!

Dogs are welcome as well – but keep in mind that there is a lot going on and the focus is definitely on the kites! This is one of the best places to dress up your pooch, have them sport the doggie t-shirt.

Also, do not forget to pack a picnic just no glass!
WARINING: Barton Springs Road will be closed from 9am to 6pm today for the festival. They will have shuttle buses that will be picking people up at State Garage “E” (1604 Colorado St.) The Palmer Events Center will also parking garage on Barton Springs Road (east of Lamar) will have all day parking available for $7.00.
