Since 1967, The Salt Lick has been a Texas legend. The kind of barbecue that people will travel across the country or world to sink their teeth into. Located a short 15-minute drive from Downtown Austin in Driftwood, the pit-smoked, family style, all-you-can-eat food at this iconic restaurant has been written about and chronicled but just about every publication there is.
Although the indoor dining area is closed for now, they have a sprawling outdoor seating area that’s BYOB! There is nothing more Texas than packing a cooler of beers and heading out to the Salt Lick. We love how easy they make it for large groups. You can call ahead and make a reservation or show up with the whole family and wait a bit for a giant table. It’s never stressful, and always a good time.
And if you really want to linger in the beautiful Driftwood, which we recommend, Salt Lick Cellars, is right next door to the restaurant. To accommodate Hill Country adventurers in search of fine wine outside of the city limits, Salt Lick Cellars was created and a tasting room built in 2009. Today, they offer many fine wines, private cabanas in the lovely Star Garden, private wine tastings, a beautiful shaded deck, picturesque vineyard views and tours, and of course, Salt Lick barbecue is available there too!
