The Blanton Museum of Art on the University of Texas campus, has been putting Austin on the map in recent years as a serious art city. Ellsworth Kelly’s most monumental piece, Austin (picture above and in everyone’s Instagram feed), sits just outside the main entrance and is now a major destination.
The permanent collection at this sprawling museum is made up of more than 19,000 works and includes European paintings, prints, and drawings, and modern and contemporary American and Latin American art. One afternoon is a chance to pretty much scratch the surface and the soaring and light-filled lobby never fails to impress.
To keep everyone safe, the Blanton has lowered its capacity and is requiring all visitors to reserve advance timed tickets. And, of course, masks are a must for all.
