Birria tacos have taken Austin by storm in the past year, and if you haven’t tried one yet, you’re missing out! While various food trucks have started serving them around town, their hours are inconsistent, and they are known to sell out. Which is why Lechuza Tacos is a welcomed establishment to get a birria taco fix.
If you’re wondering what all the birria hype is about, it’s basically a stewed meat taco in a tortilla shell that’s served with a side of consome for dipping. Sort of like a taco version of a French Dip sandwich. At Lechuza, guests have the option of a chicken, beef, or vegetarian taco with beans and avocado.
The taco shells are chili-oil-soaked tortillas plancha that are served crispy, and are also a little chewy—which is a nice touch. We tried all three variations of the tacos, dipped in consome of course, and while they were all great, the chicken taco may have been our favorite. The barracho beans are also delicious, served with pieces of dried pork rind floating in the sauce.
Guests order from a small takeout window, and Lechuza offers a nice, shaded patio that is also pet-friendly. They’re open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and also available for delivery via Postmates and Grubhub.
