Blanton Museum on the University of Texas campus

The Blanton Museum of Art on the University of Texas campus has been putting Austin on the map in recent years as a serious art city. Ellsworth Kelly’s most monumental piece, Austin (picture above and in everyone’s Instagram feed), sits just outside the main entrance and is now a major destination.

Every Thursday, admission is free at the Blanton from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. So it’s the perfect time to see it all for yourself!

The permanent collection at this sprawling museum comprises more than 19,000 works and includes European paintings, prints, drawings, and modern and contemporary American and Latin American art. One afternoon is a chance to pretty much scratch the surface and the soaring and light-filled lobby never fails to impress.

Tickets are available for purchase on site, or online here.
