One of our favorite escapes from Austin is Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, which is just 17 miles outside of Fredericksburg. Enchanted Rock is a pink granite rock hill that is officially the largest “monadnock” in the United States. We had to look that up too …

In addition to great hikes, which are mostly suitable for all levels, the views of the Texas Hill Country when you get to the top are unforgettable. The park is also great for bird-watching, star-gazing, rock climbing and rappelling, enjoying a picnic, and camping.

In general, this place is super popular and always requires a little planning ahead. Right now they are operating on a reservation-only system. We recommend getting Save the Day Pass ahead of time, which are available for a specific day up to 30 days in advance.

Also, follow the official account on Twitter for updates on availability and random closures (they happen from time to time).

An important thing to note about bringing your pup: Pets are only allowed in the designated picnic areas, the campgrounds, and on the Loop Trail.
