OPENING RECEPTION: November 6th, 2022 4PM-7PM
ON DISPLAY: November 6th-December 4th
The Gallery ATX Presents: “Birthing Justice” an exhibition featuring 20 artists from all over the world. These selected works respond to the political and social climate as well as explore themes of feminism, gender identity, and empowerment. “Birthing Justice'” encourages viewers to envision what justice means to you through the lens of the broad spectrum of bodily agency and the desire for a world free from gender constraints. This exhibition aims to mobilize and share the varied truths of those affected by the overturn of Roe v. Wade (1973)
“The truth is, no one of us can be free until everybody is free.” –Maya Angelou
After nearly 50 years of access to safe abortion for all, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade (1973) on June 24, 2022. While this decisions affects us all, it has especially compromised the safety of historically marginalized communities, such as Black, Indigenous, disabled, migrant, trans, low-income, and rural folks.
‘Birthing Justice’ as an exhibition seeks to provide a platform to empower marginalized voices to put forth artwork that explores intersectional feminist thought, action and lived experience in the fight for reproductive justice for all. The Gallery ATX aims to create a safe space and collaborative platform that visualizes activism, solidarity, and the fight for reproductive justice. We aspire to facilitate change and cultivate a space for open dialogue regarding reproductive justice, including the deconstructing of the gender binary as an organizing principle.
Without the basic freedom of reproductive rights, we are not all equal under law. For women and other folks capable of pregnancy, reproductive freedom intersects with our emotional, psychological, physical, and financial wellbeing. Everyone deserves the right to abortions, medical care, and self-determination. We pledge our solidarity to all people seeking to express their body autonomy and rights to reproductive justice.
